New cycle display — same great performance.
A recent firmware update changed how cycle speeds appear on your S1 Plus and S2 Plus screen. The settings and functionality are exactly the same — only the display format is new. If your pump looks different than before, this is why.
Both pumps offer the same hospital-grade double electric pumping performance, closed system, whisper-quiet motor, and 2-phase expression technology. The key difference is that the S1 Plus has a built-in rechargeable battery, making it fully portable — you can pump anywhere without needing to be plugged in. The S2 Plus is a plug-in model, making it ideal for home use and comes in at a lower price point.
If portability and going back to work are priorities, the S1 Plus is the better choice. If you'll primarily pump at home near an outlet, the S2 Plus offers the same performance for less.
Hospital-grade refers to the suction strength and motor quality of the pump. Spectra's S1 and S2 Plus deliver up to 270 mmHg of suction pressure — the same level used in hospital breast pumps — designed to efficiently stimulate milk production and expression, especially for new moms establishing their supply.
A closed system means there is a physical barrier (backflow protector) that prevents milk, moisture, or bacteria from ever entering the tubing or motor. This keeps your pump hygienic and safe for your baby. Spectra's closed system design means the motor unit can never be contaminated by breast milk, unlike open-system pumps where this is a risk.
Spectra pumps mimic natural breastfeeding with two distinct phases:
Massage Mode (stimulation phase): Faster, lighter cycles that mimic a baby's initial rapid suckling to trigger your letdown reflex. This runs at 70–105 cycles per minute.
Expression Mode (extraction phase): Slower, deeper cycles that mimic a baby's feeding rhythm to efficiently extract milk. This runs at 38–54 cycles per minute.
Spectra pumps are designed with a whisper-quiet motor, making them among the quietest breast pumps available. Most moms describe the sound as a very soft hum — quiet enough to use during work calls, beside a sleeping baby, or in a shared space without drawing attention.
Many Canadian extended health benefit plans cover breast pumps as durable medical equipment. Major providers including Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Blue Cross, and Green Shield Canada may cover part or all of the cost, depending on your specific plan.
Coverage varies — some plans reimburse 70–100% of the purchase price, sometimes with a doctor's prescription. We recommend calling the number on the back of your benefits card to confirm your coverage before purchasing.
After purchasing your Spectra pump on Walmart.ca, simply email us at info@spectrababycanada.com with your name and Walmart order number. We'll send you an official Spectra Baby Canada invoice formatted specifically for Canadian insurance submissions within 1–2 business days. There is no charge for this.
It depends on your plan. Some insurers require a physician's written order or prescription, while others only require the receipt and invoice. We recommend asking your insurance provider: "Do I need a prescription to claim a breast pump under medical equipment coverage?" — before you purchase.
Many insurance providers only cover breast pump costs within 60–90 days after giving birth, so it's important to act quickly. Check your specific plan details or call your provider as soon as possible to understand your window for submission.

Almost certainly not! A recent update changed how cycle speeds are shown on the S1 Plus and S2 Plus display screens. Instead of the old numbers, you'll now see C1 through C5 levels with cycles-per-minute values. Your pump is performing exactly as it should. See the S1/S2 Display Update guide at the top of this page for the full breakdown.
