How to Store Breast Milk Safely: A Complete Reference
Room temperature, fridge, freezer — how long does breast milk last, and how do you store it safely? Here's a clear reference you can bookmark.
Once you've pumped your milk, storing it safely is the next priority. The guidelines aren't complicated, but they're worth getting right. Here's a clear reference for healthy, full-term babies — always defer to your own health provider's current advice.
Breast milk storage times
Freshly pumped milk
- Room temperature (about 16–25°C): up to 4 hours is ideal
- Refrigerator (about 4°C): up to 4 days
- Freezer (about -18°C): 6 months is best, up to 12 months acceptable
Thawed milk (previously frozen)
- Refrigerator: use within 24 hours
- Room temperature: use within 1–2 hours
- Never refreeze thawed milk
When in doubt, throw it out: These are general guidelines. If milk smells off or you're unsure how long it's been out, it's safest not to use it.
Best practices for storage
- Label every container with the date you pumped
- Use the oldest milk first (first in, first out)
- Store in small portions (2–4 oz) to reduce waste
- Freeze bags lay flat to save space and thaw faster
- Leave a little space at the top of containers — milk expands when frozen
- Store milk in the back of the fridge or freezer, not the door, where temperature is most stable
Thawing and warming
- Thaw in the fridge overnight, or under warm running water
- Never microwave breast milk — it creates hot spots and can damage beneficial components
- Warm by placing the container in warm water
- Gently swirl (don't shake vigorously) to mix any separated fat
- Test the temperature on your wrist before feeding
What about separation and smell?
It's completely normal for stored breast milk to separate into layers, with the fattier cream rising to the top. Just swirl gently to recombine. Some thawed milk can develop a soapy or metallic smell due to a natural enzyme; it's generally still safe, though some babies may reject it.
Storage containers
Use containers designed for breast milk — BPA-free bottles or dedicated milk storage bags. Spectra offers milk storage bags and bottles designed to seal and store safely.
